âMemoriesâ
I finally had a reason to smile, other than the fact that I was thrilled to find the old journal and read its long-kept secrets and history. The thought of Emmaline and Ophelia hiding Annabeth and moving her to safety literally made me breathe a sigh of relief. Their friendship was inspiring. It defied both the times they lived in and all those who knew them, but did not really know them. I suppose women in those days either had to be clever and cunning or submissive and silent when it came to abusive husbands. I wondered if purchasing Ophelia for Emmaline when she was so young was wise, but now I see that the Lagoysâ desire to appear wealthy by showing that even their child owned a slave served a much higher purpose. Had they not done it, they would have deprived history of a great friendship and the birth of what is slowly becoming the âNew South.â Babies like Annabethâs are literally changing our face. I had new hope for a happy endingâor maybe I had just hit a plateau before the next valley.
I once again settled into my soft sofa and started to read. I had my glass of tea on the coffee table and Miss Claudiaâs blanket over my legs. Now all I needed was to know the ending. I hoped it would be good. I realized if it were not, I was praying, as I had been over that past few days that I could change the past. It was different from reading about the Civil War and slavery in some watered-down history book. The book I was holding was history. It had changed my way of thinking and inspired me in so many ways. It was almost painful to think Annabeth might not fare as well in her journey through these pages. I wondered if it felt the same to my grandpa watching me struggle and hoping for the best all these years.
